Joining the Thornhill Dermatology Centre team in October 2014, Dr. Joel DeKoven is dedicated to providing expert patient care. With over 22 years of practical experience, Dr. DeKoven excels within all aspects of dermatology. His extensive training in emergency medicine, preventive medicine, public health and dermatology makes him an ideal physician for the complex facets of dermatology. Dr. DeKoven has been practicing in the Toronto area since 1992 in both general and laser dermatology. In addition to his role at Thornhill Dermatology Centre, Dr. DeKoven is currently a consultant dermatologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Ontario.
Dr. DeKoven earned both his undergraduate degree (economics) and medical degree from the University of Manitoba. Following the completion of his MD, Dr. DeKoven spent the next two years working full-time as an emergency physician in Winnipeg. Furthering his medical education, Dr. DeKoven then completed a comprehensive community medicine residency at the University of Toronto. This multi-faceted program allowed Dr. DeKoven to develop skills and training in the areas of public health, preventative medicine and dermatology. His passion for dermatology was ignited through an intense training opportunity with one of Canada’s leading experts in contact dermatitis. Always in search of furthering his medical education, Dr. DeKoven also obtained a master’s degree in health sciences in community health and epidemiology. Upon completion, Dr. DeKoven became the AIDS physician for the City of Toronto department of public health.
Dr. DeKoven is revered as an expert in the evaluation and treatment of complex allergic and work-related diseases. Specializing in allergic contact dermatitis, he is a select member of the North American Contact Dermatitis Group. Dr. DeKoven has co-authored numerous articles concerning dermatology and has been an invited speaker at many academic meetings throughout North America. An Associate Professor with the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, Dr. DeKoven is dedicated to medical education. For over a decade, Dr. DeKoven served as director of the dermatology residency program at the University of Toronto (1994-2006). His extensive and far-reaching medical training make him a valued addition to the Thornhill Dermatology Centre team.
